The AAP won two wards in the recently concluded municipal board election in Lakhimpur and Tinsukia districts of Assam.
Digital Desk: Following the triumph of the Punjab meeting poll, the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) has decided to head for the GMC election (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) 2022 in Assam.
It should run in each of the 60 wards, with 99 per cent of candidates chosen from among the ward's many citizens. The election dates are expected to be announced soon.
Rajesh Sharma, a member of the AAP National Council and Assam in charge, who carefully monitors the urban election preparations, said the Kejriwal model would work in the Assam capital as it worked in Punjab.
The AAP won two wards in the recently concluded municipal board polls in Lakhimpur and Tinsukia districts, even though the BJP won the elections.
"While electorate in Lakhimpur and Tinsukia may favour AAP to a BJP-like force, we are confident that the results in Guwahati will be far better. Punjab's success doesn't necessarily influence the upcoming election success we're going to taste, but Kejriwal's Delhi model impacts it," Sharma expressed.
The AAP has formed committees in 28 of the state's 33 districts, and the party's leadership claimed that this would not be feasible without district support. According to Sharma, several BJP and National Students Union of India (NSUI) cadre level leaders have entered AAP in Assam.
AAP's co-in-charge in Gujarat, Sharma, said the party's triumph in the local body elections is an example of how a regional party can become a national party.
"While we have MLAs in Delhi, Punjab, and Goa, we now have representation in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, and Kerala," he remarked.
He stated that the AAP will always be picky in choosing their candidates. Laxmi Kanta Dubey, the AAP's state joint coordinator, said the party had already received applications from 15 GMC wards before the elections dates were announced.
"In the just finished Assam municipal elections, we filtered out 34 candidates from 150 applicants, and the majority of them did well." "While two people won, 22 people came in second or third place in their wards," Sharma said.
She stated that the AAP encourages people to forward the names of young, educated, and honest candidates in the GMC elections. Candidates free of the three Cs–corruption, criminal record, and communalism–will be prioritised by the AAP.
