AASU, Raijor Dal slams State government over its failure to provide 24/7 power supply

The state is currently reeling under extreme heat wave conditions, and the residents of Assam are complaining about the constant power outages and higher electricity tariffs.

Digital Desk: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Raijor Dal slams the BJP government over their failure to keep its promise of providing a 24-hour power supply to the people of the State and blamed the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) for not being able to provide electricity to the citizens. The union demanded the state government and APDCL to take the initiative to supply electricity without power cuts to the citizens.

Talking to the media, Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi said that if the Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma genuinely cared about the people of the state then he would have done something to cop up with power cut issues.

Assam is at the 29th number in 33 states in providing electricity, 28 states are providing power at lower prices than Assam, he added.

In-charge President Utpal Sharma and General Secretary Shankarjyoti stated in a statement that people had begun staging protests as a response to the state government and the APDCL's failure to provide regular electricity.

They also remarked how the load shedding is making people's lives worse at a time when temperatures are approaching 37 degrees Celsius. They also mentioned that the state's daily demand is around 2500 megawatts, but that the state can only now produce 1800–2000 megawatts daily, leaving a deficit of 500–700 megawatts daily. The APDCL and the electricity department were supposed to meet the demands, according to AASU, but they did not succeed in doing so.

Amid protests and power outages, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that load shedding is being personally watched adding that in the past, 1,800 Megawatts (MW) were needed, but this year, 2,500 MW were needed.
"We do not have so much electricity as of now, and if we have to buy electricity, then the power tariff will increase by Re. 1," CM Sarma remarked when explaining the reasons why there may be a chance that the electricity tariff could go up.

It is to be noted that the state is currently reeling under extreme heat wave conditions, and the residents of Assam are complaining about the constant power outages and higher electricity tariffs.
