Digital Desk: Shankar Jyoti Baruah announced his resignation on Thursday from his role as the General Secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). Baruah's decision, he emphasized, was voluntary and made independently.

In a social media statement, Baruah acknowledged the ongoing controversy surrounding him, noting that while the truth will ultimately be determined in court, he felt it was appropriate to step down from his position.

“I will send my release letter to the central committee shortly. I remain ever grateful to everyone for the support and cooperation extended to me until this moment”, read Baruah's post.

The controversy centers on allegations made by a student who claims Baruah misled her with promises of marriage, subjected her to emotional and physical abuse, and issued death threats. These accusations have ignited extensive discussions and led AASU to assert its commitment to addressing the issue, while also respecting Baruah’s choice to resign.

Baruah, who has confirmed a past relationship with the student, stated that it ended six months ago. In response to the legal challenges, he has secured anticipatory bail. In his resignation announcement, Baruah expressed gratitude for the support he has received and indicated that he will formally submit his resignation letter to the central committee soon.
