Assam: ASTC buses entering Guwahati get an order for not using the Maligaon Route

Digital Desk: On June 1, the Kamrup metropolitan district directed all ASTC sub-urban and long-distance buses arriving in Guwahati to travel to the Rupnagar depot via National Highway 37 via Lokhora, Garchuk, Beltola, or Khanapara.

"Whereas the construction of a flyover in the Maligaon area is underway and the city is experiencing tremendous congestion in that area, the buses of ASTC coming from Sub-Urban and long distant places are to reach Rupnagar depot via National Highway-37 via Garchuk or Lokhora or Beltola or Khanapara to avoid undue congestion w.e.f. 02,06.2023," the order stated.

The order was issued on Twitter by the official account of the Kamrup Metro DC office. The post read, "Advisory for the kind information of citizens, commuters, and concerned stakeholders."

In contrast, beginning June 1, Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses would cease operations in an apparent state-wide protest.

According to reports, ASTC employees have launched a strike at every bus station in Assam.

This comes after the state administration opted to relieve 771 workers of their obligations for allegedly gaining employment through unfair ways.

"In terms of contractual staff, it has been claimed that the entire 2274 staff were hired without following the proper procedure or the reservation system, nor were any interviews held." The matter will be investigated, and if found to be true, a Show Cause notice will be given to the then-MD, ASTC for violating government rules, as well as a Departmental Proceeding against such government," states the notification.
