Arunachal: Govt suspends internet services in Itanagar till Sunday after clashes over paper leak

The swearing-in ceremony for the members of the state Public Service Commission was postponed by the Arunachal Pradesh administration.

Digital Desk: In the wake of the violence that occurred during a demonstration against the leak in the question paper of the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission examination, the state of Arunachal Pradesh has temporarily halted mobile internet connections in the Itanagar Capital Region.

According to a State Home Department order, all private internet service providers, including BSNL, will have their internet services suspended until 17.00 hrs. on February 19, 2023 (Sunday), in order to prevent further instances of serious law and order issues and for the benefit of public emergency/safety.

A scuffle between demonstrators and police forces earlier on Friday in Itanagar resulted in up to 10 injuries, including four security officers. The clash was in response to a protest against the recent release of the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission examination question paper.

The swearing-in ceremony for the members of the state Public Service Commission was postponed by the Arunachal Pradesh administration.

Security personnel were obliged to use baton charges on the protesters and tear gas to manage the situation. Enough security personnel have been deployed in the Itanagar capital region to handle any undesirable situations and to uphold law and order, according to Chukhu Apa, IGP (L&O).

According to the IGP, protesters wanted the State Public Service Commission's newly appointed members and chair to postpone their swearing-in ceremony.

Chukhu Apa, IGP, law and order, stated that "they should have observed the law and order."

In response to the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) paper leak scandal, the Pan Arunachal Join Steering Committee (PAJSC) reportedly declared a 12-hour bandh and observed a mass action on Friday.

Many young people demonstrated in the street and chanted anti-state government chants despite the administration's implementation of Section 144.

As some demonstrators set fire to a motorcycle and one four-wheeler, damaged property, and threw stones at security forces, the situation became violent, according to the IGP.
