Digital Desk: Significant split in the All Assam Student Union (AASU) following the decision of over 300 former leaders and activists to join the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Sources claim that during the most recent AASU session, the decision was made by former AASU employees and leaders. Meeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the AASU delegation, led by veteran AASU leader Dibya Jyoti Medhi, expressed their support for the BJP.
Infighting and dissatisfaction among AASU Brigade members, as noted by former student leader Dibya Jyoti Medhi, prompted the decision to leave the group and join the BJP.
On November 21, Medhi left AASU along with several other employees. While negotiations with the chief minister are ongoing, it is reported that Dibyajyoti Medhi and 300 employees of AASU will be joining the BJP by this week.
"I used to work for the AASU leadership, but going forward, I will follow the party leadership. The BJP has drawn us and the younger generation with its development narrative about the chief minister. That's the reason I've approached the BJP to work together with them," Dibyajyoti Medhi stated in a media statement.
"The youth of the state will make significant progress under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's direction. With the same aim, CM Sarma is working continuously for the people, and in support of his endeavor, we former student leaders are extending our wholehearted support. The joining process should be finished by next week. The discussions are underway. We desire the growth and well-being of the populace, particularly the state's youth," he further stated.
