Digital Desk: A special task force (STF) from Guwahati and a team from the Assam division of the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) apprehended a total of five poachers and seized numerous illegal wildlife products, officials informed on Tuesday.
According to reports, the operation was conducted based on information provided by reliable sources about poachers in Kaziranga. To find the offenders, a joint team from Guwahati reached Kaliabor in the Nagaon district of Assam.
The joint operation team conducted search operations at various locations in Nagaon that were within the jurisdiction of Jakhalabandha Police Station and Kaliabor Police Station where the poachers were arrested.
According to officials, those detained included Md Gafar Quresy, 24, Md Okil Quresy, 60, and Md Safiqul Islam, 39, all from Jakhalabandha, as well as Ujjal Bharali, 20, of Rowta, and Aditya Sarma, 23, of Khanapara in Guwahati.
Officials also reported that during the operation, they were able to seize from their possession, 12 pieces of ivory, 2 tiger canines, 15 rhino hooves, a deer antler, 1.031 kg of pangolin scales, and 5 mobile phones.
The STF team subsequently handed over the arrested poachers, together with the recovered and seized goods, to the Jakhalabandha Police.
Officials assured that additional legal action will be taken against the offenders and that the investigation will continue.
In order to begin legal proceedings, a case was registered under Jakhalabandha PS case number 122/2023 U/S 9/39/44/48(A)/49(B)/51 of the WLP Act 1972.
