Digital Desk: Despite Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dedicating a record number of development projects in the region at an investment of over Rs 2,000 crores, the state government is now focusing on the Barak Valley in Assam.
The Silchar Water Supply Scheme and the Silchar Cancer Centre, which would cost Rs 177 crore and Rs 265 crore, respectively, were two of the larger projects that were inaugurated today.
Perceived as a political maneuver ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Chief Minister of Assam declared investments amounting to Rs 2089 crore on the second day of the 'Vikas Yatra'.
The Bhoomi Poojan for the development and degradation of Amjur Fulertal road in Binnakandi for Rs 56 crore and Karimganj Medical College for Rs 578 crore was done on Friday.
Additionally, the government invested Rs 2,000 crore in Barak Valley with the laying of the foundation stone of a 100-bed district hospital in Lakhimpur, which came at an expense of Rs 127 crore. This brings the total amount of government spending in the region to Rs 2,000 crore.
"Since 2022, over 2 lakh patients have undergone treatment in the 10 cancer hospitals opened by our Govt. These hospitals run on a unique model where the State government doesn’t interfere in its day-to-day functioning," stated CM Sarma about the Silchar Cancer Centre on X.
Additionally, he stated that the Barak Valley will receive a new medical college after a 55-year wait, emphasizing the efforts made by the state administration to stimulate economic growth in the area.
In an additional post on X, Himanta Biswa Sarma discussed improving accessibility to the Barak Valley, stating, "By 2026 people from Barak Valley will be able to reach Guwahati via Haflong, making the region more accessible."
Meanwhile, the chief minister promoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks and the efforts of the ruling party at a public event he spoke at today while in Southern Assam.
