    Assam: Bir Lachit Sena Leader Shrinkhal Chaliha Granted Bail
    The Bir Lachit Sena leader was placed under house arrest on Saturday morning by the Sivasagar police and the paramilitary force.

    Digital Desk: Leader of the Bir Lachit Sena Shrinkhal Chaliha, who was arrested in connection with extortion and abuse, has been given bail. Tuesday's hearing before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in Sivasagar saw his request for release approved.

    Chaliha was detained earlier today in Sivasagar, Assam, following the internet publication of a video showing him attempting to extort money from a businessman and beating him after the guy refused to pay the amount asked.

    A source said that the Bir Lachit Sena leader would be released the following day after spending the night in Sivasagar jail. It is no longer possible to obtain the Rs. 15,000 bail bond.

    Notably, Shrinkhal Chaliha was arrested just two days after the Sivasagar Police allegedly placed him under house arrest. He was allegedly abusing and spitting on the face of a businessman in Sivasagar in a video that was posted on social media. A group of males entered a commercial facility in Sivasagar on April 28 and got into a verbal altercation, during which the leader is said to have spit on the businessman's face before leaving the scene, according to CCTV evidence.
