Digital Desk: In a significant show of support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious 'One Nation, One Election' plan, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has lauded the move as a landmark decision that could revolutionize India's electoral landscape. Speaking to the media on Friday, CM Sarma expressed his satisfaction with the appointment of former President Ram Nath Kovind to lead the commission responsible for exploring the feasibility of this monumental electoral reform.
"Today, PM Modi has taken a landmark decision by appointing a commission to look after the issue of 'One Nation, One Election.' I am very happy that a person of stature like Ram Nath Kovind Nath has accepted the offer," said CM Sarma.
The 'One Nation, One Election' concept, which aims to synchronize national and state elections across the country, has been a topic of discussion and debate for several years. The proposed reform seeks to streamline the electoral process, reduce the financial burden of multiple elections, and allow governments to focus on governance and development rather than perpetual campaigning.

"Multiple elections involve a lot of money, and since India is always in election mode, development suffers a lot. PM Modi has correctly realized this, and he is advocating that 'One Nation, One Election' will take India to a different level. Expenditure will reduce, and development will take place throughout the five years. I think this commission is a gift to the nation by PM Modi Ji," CM Sarma added, emphasizing the potential benefits of the initiative.
In addition to commending Prime Minister Modi's visionary approach, Himanta Biswa Sarma also extended his congratulations to Ram Nath Kovind on his appointment to lead the committee tasked with studying the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal.
The central government had recently constituted a committee, with Ram Nath Kovind at its helm, to assess the viability of implementing 'One Nation, One Election' for simultaneous national and state elections across India. Sources have reported that the committee will explore the possibility of introducing the necessary legislation for this electoral reform.
Previously, the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal had been examined and reviewed by various governmental bodies, including a parliamentary standing committee, the Law Commission, and Niti Aayog, all of which submitted their reports on the matter.
As India gears up for a Special Session of Parliament scheduled from September 18 to September 22, speculation abounds that the government may present a bill to enact the 'One Nation, One Election' proposal into law. The move is seen as a significant step toward bringing uniformity and efficiency to India's electoral process, as well as reducing the constant electoral cycle's impact on governance and development.
