Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the very first day of the New Year flagged off 200 Air Conditioned electric buses and launched the National Common Mobility Card in Guwahati city.
Addressing the gathering here at Rupnagar locality in Guwahati, CM Sarma highlighted the state's previous endeavours, mentioning the launch of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses on January 1, 2023. Now, at an anticipated cost of Rs 261 crore, Assam is leading the way by introducing AC electric buses that will serve suburbs including AIIMS, Mirza, Baihata, Jagiroad, and Chandrapur.
One notable feature of these AC electric buses is the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, allowing the state police to take action against offenders based on recorded footage. This move enhances both passenger safety and law enforcement capabilities.
With a minimum fare of Rs 10, the bus service is not only cost-effective but also equipped with GPS navigation to navigate through traffic efficiently. The chief minister emphasized the city's commitment to a green future by announcing plans to halt diesel-run buses by 2025, ensuring that all public vehicles in Guwahati will be electrified.
CM Sarma extended a plea to auto-rickshaw drivers, Ola-Uber operators, and other private bus owners to transition to electric vehicles (EVs). The state government is actively working on an EV strategy to facilitate the conversion of vehicles from fossil fuels to electric power, alongside expanding charging infrastructure.
Assam now stands as the third state in India to introduce the National Common Mobility Card, promoting seamless travel across various modes of transportation. The state's collaboration with the rest of the country to combat pollution is evident through efforts to generate 3000 MW of solar power, reduce carbon emissions, and install 2000 new CCTV cameras in Guwahati.
Notably, the city is poised to receive India's first modern river ferry terminal within the next three months. Funded by the World Bank, this terminal at Fancy Bazar on the Brahmaputra symbolizes the state's commitment to diverse and sustainable transportation options.
In a move to simplify licensing procedures, CM Sarma recommended issuing original driving licenses without unnecessary hurdles. Starting in 2024, licensing and fitness evaluations are proposed to be conducted at private driver training centres, streamlining the process and reducing the burden on applicants.
Moreover, the chief minister advocated for the establishment of more driver training centres across the state, emphasizing the importance of skilled and responsible drivers for safe and sustainable transportation.
Assam's multifaceted approach, from introducing eco-friendly buses and mobility cards to developing river ferry terminals and promoting EV adoption, showcases a comprehensive commitment to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for Guwahati and beyond.
