Digital Desk: In a landmark move aimed at accelerating development and enhancing administrative efficiency in Upper Assam, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the new Chief Minister's Secretariat in Dibrugarh on Friday. This inauguration marks the first time the Chief Minister's Secretariat has been established outside Guwahati, where all state administrative work was previously conducted from the Janata Bhawan.
The new Secretariat is set to significantly benefit the residents of nine districts—Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Charaideo, Lakhimpur, and Dhemaji—by bringing administrative services closer to them and eliminating the need for travel to Guwahati. Chief Minister Sarma plans to stay in Dibrugarh for four days each month to more effectively address the concerns of Upper Assam’s residents.
Describing the event as historic, CM Sarma took to the platform ‘X’ to express his sentiments: “Today, I had the privilege to join Hon’ble Union Minister Shri @sarbanandsonwal dangoriya and my other colleagues to dedicate the Chief Minister’s secretariat in Dibrugarh. This Secretariat is not just a building but illustrates our sustained efforts to bring governance closer to the people. For decades, due to legacy issues, there has been an opinion that people living away from the Capital have missed out on developmental opportunities.”
He further emphasized, “Since the last 3 years, we have been focusing on establishing districts as the fulcrum of governance. We have empowered district and sub-district machinery to make most decisions. With the opening of today’s secretariat, nine districts surrounding Dibrugarh will have proximity to top-level decision-making. Personally, I will be spending 4 days a month in this office.”
The Chief Minister also assured that these initiatives would lead to faster decision-making and quicker project implementation in the coming months. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and several state cabinet ministers, marking a significant step towards regional empowerment and administrative efficiency.
