Digital Desk: In response to the May 4 incident in which two Kuki women were paraded naked by a mob of Meitei men in Manipur, the Assam Congress lambasted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also the convenor of the BJP-led Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
Although the incident happened on May 4, just a day after racial hostilities between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur broke out, a video showing the two ladies being paraded naked through the streets first appeared on social media on July 19.
Himanta Biswa Sarma is currently receiving criticism from Congress, which claims that the NEDA, has failed in every way.
Assam Mahila Congress Chief Mira Borthakur told reporters in Guwahati that the event of displaying the two Kuki women in Manipur was disgraceful for a civilised society.
The Assam Mahila Congress chief also questioned Assam Chief Minister and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma for his silence on the issue.
"The incident occurred 74 days ago, and instead of working to bring justice to the victims, the Manipur government is attempting to cover it up," Assam Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur said.
"The BJP government in Manipur has lost every right to remain in power," she added. It must be repealed, and President's Rule must be implemented."
"He always has an answer for everything. But he has no explanation for this heinous crime. Why can't he answer why the violence in Manipur hasn't been brought under control yet?" she said. "NEDA is useless. It has failed in every way," she stated.
