    Assam: Flood situation worsens as relentless rain continues; 34,000 people displaced

    Digital Desk: Assam's flood situation deteriorated on June 16 as continuous rainfall inundated fresh areas across 11 districts, affecting over 34,000 people. 


    According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority's (ASDMA) daily flood report, most rivers, including the Brahmaputra, continue to experience a trend of rising water levels in different places, although none are flowing above the danger mark. 


    Reportedly, 34,189 people including 14, 675 women and 3,787 children are being wracked by the impact of the flood. The number of people affected by flood waters grew from over 28,000 in three districts on June 15 as the rainfall continued throughout the state. 


    The affected districts are Bishwanath, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri.

    Lakhimpur has been hit the most, with around 23,516 individuals affected by the deluge, followed by Dibrugarh (3,857), Darrang (2231), Bishwanath (2231), and Dhemaji (1,085). 


    Eleven relief distribution centres have been set up with eight in Lakhimpur and two in Udalguri. 


    According to the ASDMA, floods have affected 77 villages and destroyed 209.67 hectares of cropland across the state. 


    Four embankments, two in Lakhimpur and two in Udalguri, have been breached. Massive erosions have been reported in the districts of Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong West, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri, the ASDMA said. 


    On the other hand, landslides have also been reported in some areas of the Dima Hasao and Kamrup districts as a result of heavy rain, according to the report. 


    Moreover, floodwaters have damaged embankments, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure in the districts of Baksa, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, and Udalguri.
