Assam Government to extend financial grants to former ULFA cadres
A total of 852 surrendered cadres and the families of 84 missing individuals will get benefit from the scheme.

Digital desk: The Assam State Government has assured to provide financial grants to over 900 former ULFA cadres, including the families of several cadres who have gone missing over time and remain unaccounted for. This initiative is part of the government's rehabilitation scheme, set to take place in Guwahati on Saturday.

Reports indicate that a total of 852 surrendered cadres and the families of 84 missing individuals will get benefit from the scheme. These cadres, who have remained members of the pro-talks faction since they surrendered at various times, are going to receive support under the tripartite peace agreement signed last December. Signed between the Centre, the state government, and the pro-talks faction of ULFA, the agreement paves the way for such initiatives.

Over the past two and a half years, the Assam government has successfully restored 8,756 surrendered militants from various rebel groups. This laudable effort falls under the Surrender-cum-Rehabilitation Scheme of the central government and the Swavalamban Scheme of the Assam government, boasting an estimated success rate of 80%.

The benefits of this rehabilitation represent a wide spectrum of groups, encompassing the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent, various sections of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, Karbi rebel factions, Adivasi outfits, and numerous smaller insurgent groups hailing from diverse communities such as Gorkha, Bengali, Kuki, Rabha, and Dimasa.

Engaged in activities like cultivation, livestock farming, poultry farming, fishery, and the restaurant business, these former militants are now receiving steadfast support from the state government in their journey towards sustainable livelihoods.

Under the central government's rehabilitation scheme, each surrendered member will receive Rs 4 lakh as a fixed deposit, maturing after three years. Additionally, they stand to benefit from a further Rs 1.5 lakh under the state government's Swavalamban Scheme.
