Digital Desk: In a horrific incident, a contractor was killed and set ablaze in a field near his home in Dhakuakhana, North Lakhimpur.

The victim, identified as Sunil Gogoi, was a contractor associated with the Jal Jeevan Mission.

Gogoi was reportedly shot dead and then set ablaze with bamboo that was kept in the field, which was around 200 meters from his residence in Sumoni. His body was partially burned after his head was chopped off. Items belonging to Gogoi were discovered at the scene, including a sandal, a bamboo stick, and a machete "daa."

Gogoi left his house at around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night in search of a frog, which is when the incident occurred. Shortly after he came to Sumoni in search of frog, the horrific attack took place. There are rumors that Gogoi was burned alive with bamboo, beheaded, and killed. The locals believe that chemicals were used to accelerate the burning process as it was raining.

There have been questions raised by Sunil Gogoi's recent involvement in the arrest of Ghilamara Public Health Technical Division's corrupt executive engineer, Jayanta Kumar Goswami. Gogoi's accusation resulted in Goswami's arrest by the anti-corruption department, following which substantial quantities of cash were extracted from Goswami's residence.

Concerns have been raised by the mysterious murder of Gogoi, a vocal contractor who exposed misconduct in an important department. A man renowned for leading a modest life, Gogoi had only been back home a few days before the incident from Guwahati. Because of his connection with the public health service, many people suspect foul play.

On Sunday morning, authorities arrived at the scene, including sub-divisional police officer Saudnya Suklabaidya and Kuldip Gogoi, the officer-in-charge of the Dhakuakhana Sadar police station. Based on the relatives' FIR, police have located some of the partly burned remains and initiated an investigation.

Assam DGP GP Singh took to X, pledging a thorough investigation into the murder. He tweeted, "Reference murder at Dhakuakhana, North Lakhimpur - A team of @AssamCid and FSL led by IGP CID has been sent to the spot from Guwahati to associate in the investigation with @lakhimpurpolice. We shall leave no stone unturned to identify the perpetrators and bring them to face justice."
