Digital Desk: Assam has emerged as a leading performer in the latest SDG India Index 2023-24 released by NITI Aayog. The northeastern state has increased its overall score by 8 points since the 2020-21 edition, showcasing substantial advancements in sustainable development.
Since 2018, Assam has consistently improved, boosting its score by 16 points and securing a spot in the "Front Runner" category. This classification signifies a score ranging from 65 to 99 on the SDG index, underscoring the state's dedication to fulfilling the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
Following Assam's lead, Manipur also made significant progress, enhancing its score by 8 points and joining the "Front Runner" category. Other northeastern states exhibited varying degrees of improvement: Tripura progressed by 6 points, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim by 5 each, Mizoram by 4, Meghalaya by 3, and Nagaland by 2.
While most northeastern states achieved "Front Runner" status, Meghalaya and Nagaland remain categorized as "Performers." Notably, Meghalaya attained "Front Runner" status specifically in the goal of Good Health and Well-Being, highlighting its strides in this domain.

At the national level, the SDG India Index 2023-24 shows positive trends across all states and union territories. The country's overall SDG score has risen to 71, a significant improvement from 66 in 2020-21 and 57 in 2018. Notable advancements have been observed in goals related to poverty eradication, decent work and economic growth, climate action, and biodiversity conservation.
This index, which evaluates progress on 113 indicators spanning 16 SDGs, serves as a crucial instrument for promoting competitive and cooperative federalism among states.
