Digital Desk: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has gained an early lead in the vital Assam municipal elections, which began counting at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
According to the state election commission, the BJP is leading with 296 of the total 977 wards of the 80 municipal boards, followed by others with 62 and Congress in 33. Polls for 80 municipal boards comprising 977 wards were held on Sunday across the state.

Notably, in the Assam municipal election, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded the most candidates (825), followed by the Congress with 706 and the BJP’s alliance party
Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) with 243.
The presiding officer, Kamrup Chandan Kalita, said, “For the first time, EVMs were used instead of ballot papers in these elections.”
