Digital Desk: Following Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's directions, Assam Police started a significant crackdown on underage weddings in the state, apprehending several persons from Morigaon and Majuli districts.
According to police, as part of the operation, two people were arrested on Thursday night in Morigaon district's Moirabari region for marrying girls under the age of 18, while six others were apprehended in Majuli district.
Dhubri district police, on the other hand, have detained at least 96 people for their alleged involvement in child marriages.
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a video conference meeting with senior police officials, including Superintendents of Police from all districts, on Thursday night to discuss the state-wide police action against child marriage that would begin today. The Chief Minister urged the people to support the government's efforts to end the evil practice of child marriage in the state.
"Chaired a VC of SPs in presence of DGP GP Singh regarding State-wide police action to be started from tomorrow against child marriage and reviewed the plans.
"I appeal to the public to lend their support and collaborate with us in our efforts to rid the state of this wicked practice," Sarma tweeted on Friday.
