Digital Desk: A youth in Assam's Barpeta district threw acid on a 17-year-old girl on Monday, after she rejected his advances.
According to reports, the incident took place at Gumir Pathar Village of Sarukhetri Assembly constituency.
According to the victim's family, the accused in the acid assault was a man named Rafizul Islam, who lived in the Sarukhetri constituency of Barpeta's Chakir Bhitha Village under the Kayakusi police station area.
A villager in the area told the media, "Rafizul Islam has been harassing the minor for the past year. He had attempted to trap her, but she had consistently turned down his proposals. I was also informed that the youngster had tried to kidnap her in the past but had been unsuccessful. She was on her way to her home from a book fair at Fazu Bazaar in Sarukhetri when the boy poured acid on her last night.
According to locals, the incident took place around 8 and 8.30 pm.
"Two youths attacked her with acid while riding a bike. The girl began to cry out in pain. The locals came to the girl's aid after hearing her cries. She was taken to Barpeta Medical College Hospital immediately in extremely severe condition. The doctors thereafter referred her to Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati, the local villager said.
In relation to the incident, the child victim's family has already filed an FIR at the Kayakusi police station.
The victim girl's father said to the reporters, "My daughter is fighting for her life. She was attacked with acid last night. She is in pain, and her health is unstable. I know the person who was involved in the acid attack. I urge the Assam police to launch a thorough investigation and then take decisive action against the culprit, Rafizul Islam. I think the court should sentence Rafizul to death."
As per the reports, the accused Rafizul Islam, who was involved in the acid attack, also received injuries and is undergoing treatment at GMCH in critical condition.
It is to be noted that further investigation into the matter is underway.
