Digital Desk: Police Officials in western Assam's Kokrajhar district recently arrested a YouTuber on charges of trapping wild parakeets and selling them on his YouTube channel.

The offender Jahid Lifestyle is a YouTuber and he was arrested in the Gossaigaon area after PETA India filed a complaint. PETA India said in a statement on Tuesday that police confiscated two parakeets from his hands.

PETA India filed an official complaint with the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests of Assam and the Divisional Forest Officer of Kachugaon. The Kachugaon forest division has filed a preliminary offence report against the accused for violating the Wild Life (Protection) Act (WPA), 1972, by poaching, capturing, and selling wild parakeets.

According to the statement, parakeets are protected by Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, and catching, retaining, or selling them is a serious offence.

"Capturing, buying, selling, or caging parakeets is illegal and can result in a jail term of up to three years, a fine of up to Rs 25,000, or both," said Saloni Sakaria, PETA India Cruelty Response Coordinator.

"Caged birds have nothing to sing about," she remarked. Birds belong in the skies, not in cages, and we encourage anyone who keeps a bird in this manner to turn them into their local forest department or an animal protection agency for rehabilitation and reunification with a flock."

Illicit bird trafficking is a serious issue in the region, yet officials keeping no ears to the issue frequently ignore it. Only after complaining action has been taken.
