Digital Desk: The devastating floods in Assam have claimed eight more lives on Sunday, bringing the total death toll to 66. The fatalities were reported from various districts including Cachar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Nalbari, Dhemaji, and Sivasagar. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has stated that 28 out of the state's 35 districts remain inundated, affecting 22,74,289 people across 3,446 villages.
The floods have wreaked havoc on the state's croplands, submerging over 68,432.75 hectares. Extensive damage has been caused to roads, bridges, and river embankments, disrupting connectivity and daily life. To aid the affected populace, 269 relief camps have been set up, currently sheltering 53,689 individuals.
Ten rivers, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, are flowing above the danger level, exacerbating the situation. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, along with the State Disaster Response Force, police, and other agencies, have been deployed to assist in relief and rescue operations.
In Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve, the floods have submerged 68 out of 233 camps, impacting wildlife severely. Authorities have reported the death of 129 animals, including rhinos and hog deer, while 96 have been rescued.
The ongoing floods continue to pose significant challenges to Assam, necessitating extensive relief and rescue efforts by multiple agencies.
