Digital Desk: Assam is about to undergo a historic industrial transition with the entrance of a massive investment that is expected to change the economic landscape of the region, a semiconductor sector valued at an astounding Rs 27,000 crore. The Union Cabinet's approval of this innovative project marks the beginning of a new chapter in Assam's industrial achievements.
The establishment of a state-of-the-art semiconductor ATMP (assembly, test, and packaging) plant at Jagiroad, in the Morigaon district, is set to reshape Assam's industrial story, thanks to the Union Cabinet's resounding approval on February 29. This massive investment, led by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd, is expected to infuse Assam's economy with new life.
The factory is going to be established on the property that used to be the Nagaon Paper Mills, which the Assam government bought at a public auction last year.
Innovative domestic semiconductor packaging technologies, such as the ground-breaking flip chip and ISIP technologies, are at the core of this endeavor. The plant is well-positioned to service a wide range of industries, including automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones, with a startling daily output capacity of 48 million units.
Meanwhile, plans are on for Tata Electronics Private Limited and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp of Taiwan to open a semiconductor factory in Dholera, Gujarat. This factory, which boasts an astounding investment of Rs 91,000 crores, is ready to produce 50,000 wafer starts every month, serving a wide range of industries such as automotive, telecom, defense, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, display, and power electronics.
These calculated actions will strengthen India's position in the international semiconductor market and demonstrate its steadfast dedication to technical leadership. India sets out to become self-sufficient in semiconductors through cooperative projects with foreign partners, solidifying its place as a major force in the world of technology.
The Cabinet's firm approval represents a turning point in India's technical development and establishes the country as a major player in the global semiconductor industry as the country makes this enormous step towards semiconductor independence.
