The bill aims for making the cow protection law equivalent to other states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.
Assam CM at the ongoing Assembly stated that the new bill includes legal provisions to regulate the slaughter, consumption and transportation of cattle.
As per the new law for the first offence, a person can be given imprisonment of up to eight years and a fine of Rs. eight lakh and for the second offence, the punishment will be double the penalty.
Earlier, in connection with the Assam Cattle Preservation Bill Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said he will raise the issue not only with the Assam Government but also with the Centre if the law affects transits of cattle to Meghalaya from other states.
