Digital Desk: Guwahati's esteemed B Borooah College has achieved a significant milestone with the University Grants Commission (UGC) granting it 'autonomous' status. Affiliated with Gauhati University, this decision, effective from the academic year 2024-25 through 2033-34, marks a new chapter in the college's educational journey.

The approval came following the recommendation of the Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges during a meeting held in June 2024. A letter from the UGC affirmed this decision, citing compliance with Clause 7.5 of the UGC (Conferment of Autonomous Status Upon Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Autonomous Colleges) Regulations, 2023.

According to the UGC communication, Gauhati University is expected to issue a formal notification within 30 days, acknowledging B Borooah College's new status. This autonomy entails adherence to stringent UGC regulations aimed at maintaining educational standards and accountability.

The autonomy grants B Borooah College the authority to design and implement its academic programs, conduct examinations, and evaluate performance, providing greater flexibility and innovation in educational practices. However, it also necessitates strict compliance with UGC guidelines, failure of which could result in disciplinary measures as outlined in Clause 13 of the regulations.

Moreover, the college is mandated to apply for an extension of autonomous status at least three months before the end of the designated autonomy period, ensuring continuous evaluation and renewal of standards.

The granting of autonomous status is expected to bolster B Borooah College's academic stature, fostering enhanced educational outcomes and administrative autonomy. This development underscores the institution's commitment to academic excellence and progressive educational practices in the region.
