Digital Desk:  Former Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gayatri Sonowal was nabbed from her Guwahati apartment on Saturday and is now facing legal charges on the recent Bajali Corruption investigation.

Gayatri Sonowal and her husband, Bobby Singh Sharma, were both taken to the hospital throughout the night following their arrest.

Gayatri Sonowal was then detained in the Pan Bazar women's police station overnight, while her husband, Bobby Singh Sharma, was transferred to the Crime Investigation Department (CID) headquarters.

The CID detained seven people on September 1 in connection with the Bajali Corruption case, which has been unfolding for several weeks. There were five Bajali Police officers and two drivers among them, all of whom were accused of bribery.

Puskal Gogoi, Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) in Bajali, Sub-Inspector Anup Jyoti Patiri, Officer-in-Charge of Patacharkuchi Police Station, Sub-Inspector (P) Debajit Giri, in charge of Bhawanipur Outpost under Patacharkuchi Police Station, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Sasanka Das of Patacharkuchi Police Station are among the five police officers detained. ABC Injamamul Hassan, the Personal Security Officer (PSO) of Smti Gayatri Sonowal, who was the Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ) in Bajali at the time, was taken into custody as well.

In addition, Deepjoy Roy and Nabir Ahmed were identified as the two drivers involved in the alleged illegal operations.

The charges and following arrests are the result of allegations made by a supari (contract killing) businessman, which prompted a thorough investigation into the subject.

Notably, the Assam Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption received a report about monetary demands made by police officials. A trap was set in the first week of August to catch the cops, but they became cautious and the operation failed. However, a later investigation confirmed the complaint, resulting in the filing of a criminal case on August 31.
