Digital Desk: Bypolls for five assembly constituencies in Assam, which fell vacant after the recent Lok Sabha elections, are set to take place in September. These elections will be conducted according to pre-delimitation boundaries.

The 2024 Lok Sabha election in India was held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. Following the announcement of the results, five assembly constituencies in Assam—Samaguri, Behali, Dholai, Sidli, and Bongaigaon—became vacant as their representatives were elected to the Lok Sabha. Of these seats, Samaguri was held by the Congress, while the others were controlled by the BJP and its allies, AGP and BPF.

In contrast to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where by-polls in Assam were held in late September after a five-month gap, this time, the by-polls will happen after a nearly three-month interval.

The upcoming by-polls will adhere to pre-delimitation boundaries, despite the Election Commission publishing its final delimitation report for Assam on August 11. This report revised the nomenclature of 19 assembly constituencies and one parliamentary constituency, but these changes will not impact the forthcoming by-elections. The results of these bypolls are keenly awaited, as they will be instrumental in shaping the political landscape of Assam.
