Digital Desk: A day to be remembered! On December 10 each year, the state of Assam observes Martyrs' Day, a solemn occasion dedicated to remembering and honouring the sacrifices made by individuals who laid down their lives for the cause of justice, freedom, and the well-being of the Assamese people.
Notably, this day serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by the state and the indomitable spirit of those who became martyrs in the pursuit of a better future.
Every year on December 10, Swahid Diwas (Martyrs Day) is observed to remember the remembrance of martyrs like Khargeswar Talukdar who gave their lives during the Assam agitation between 1979 and 1985.
Khargeswar Talukdar became the first martyr of the Assam agitation on this day in 1979 in Bhabanipur, Barpeta district.
Furthermore, 10th December 2023 marks the 44th year since Khargeswar Talukdar was martyred.
Martyrs' Day in Assam holds special significance, particularly in the context of historical movements such as the Assam Agitation of the early 1980s. This movement, driven by concerns over illegal immigration and the preservation of Assamese identity, saw the emergence of courageous individuals who became martyrs in the struggle for justice.
It is to be mentioned that with 855 people laying down their lives the Assam agitation was held against the inrush of Bangladeshis into the state.
The observance of Martyrs' Day is a tribute to these unsung heroes. It is a time for the people of Assam to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who stood up against injustice, often facing adversities with unwavering courage.
Under Assam CM's term in 2020, the then CM Sarbananda Sonowal offered 'bhumipujan' on December 10, 2020, to mark the start of construction work on a 'Swahid Smarak' and a 'Swahid Udyan' in remembrance of the agitators died in the six-year-long Assam Movement.
Sarbananda Sonowal also released the first volume of the four-part ‘Tathyakosh’ (Data Book) on the anti-foreigner agitation.
As Assam observes Martyrs' Day on December 10, it is an opportunity for collective reflection and a renewed commitment to the values for which these martyrs stood. Their sacrifice serves as a beacon, inspiring future generations to uphold the principles of justice, equality, and cultural identity.
In honouring the state martyrs on this day, Assam pays homage to the resilience and determination that define its history.
