Digital Desk:  Under the directives of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Higher Education Department formed a five-member committee on Saturday to recommend steps to improve discipline, rules, and regulations in state educational institution hostels.

The department's committee is made up of the following individuals:

1| Dr. Alak Buragohain (Chancellor of Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology, Azara)

2| Dr. Mridul Hazarika (Former Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University)

3| Dr. Biren Das (Registrar of Tezpur University)

4| Prof. Shikhar Kumar Sarma (Department of Information Technology at Gauhati University)

5| Prof. Utpal Sarmah (Department of Instrumental and USIC at Gauhati University)

The panel was formed to propose measures aimed at improving discipline, rules, and regulations in hostels, specifically to enforce in and out time from hostels, complete prohibition of alcohol use by students, prohibition of extended stay by ex-hostellers, and promotion of healthy community life within the hostel.

According to a notice dated June 1, 2023, the committee has been asked to provide a detailed report within three months.

Notably, the committee was formed two days after CM Sarma requested that a high-level investigation be launched into the horrific road accident in Jalukbari that killed seven Assam Engineering College students.

To prevent the recurrence of any occurrence that could endanger the student community's lives, the Chief Minister directed the Education Department to form a committee to enhance discipline, rules, and regulations in educational institution hostels.

Furthermore, the committee will also look into severe enforcement of hostel in and out times, complete prohibition of alcohol and other drugs on hostel campuses and hostels, and prohibition of an extended stay of hostel ex-boarders. The group will also make recommendations on how to promote healthy communal life within the hostels.
