Crackdown on illegal moneylenders leads To 122 apprehensions in Assam

Digital Desk: In relation to the recent statewide crackdown on illegal moneylenders, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that up to 122 people had been arrested. 

The Chief Minister of Assam claimed in a post on X that bank records, cash, gold jewelry, loan agreements, and land mortgage paperwork had been taken by the police. 

Assuring that the police will shield the weak against unscrupulous lenders, Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, "In a statewide crackdown on illegal moneylenders, we have apprehended 122 individuals. The police have also seized cash, loan agreements, gold jewelry, land mortgage documents, and bank records. We are committed to persisting in this initiative to shield our vulnerable poor & middle-class citizens from the clutches of these unscrupulous lenders."

This occurs amid the state's recent wave of moneylender arrests. Three moneylenders in Hajo, Assam, were taken into custody on Tuesday morning during an early-morning raid.

Officer-in-Charge Nabajit Nath of the Hajo Police Station led the operation team. It was revealed that the three people who had been arrested were Taijuddin Ali (35), Azizur Rahman (45), and Mazibur Rahman (37).

The cops uncovered several bank accounts, a sizable amount of paperwork, multiple cell phones, and Rs 3,50,000 in undeclared cash during the operation. 

 

An inquiry is underway to find further connections. Notably, Assam Police detained two more loan sharks on the evening of February 18 in the state's Chirang district on suspicion of lending illicit money.
