Dibrugarh police arrest central jail superintendent after Amritpal Singh's communication network uncovered
Extensive steps are being taken to avoid any recurrence of such operations, and investigations are underway...

Digital Desk: Assam police arrested Nripen Das, the superintendent of the Dibrugarh Central Jail, on Thursday for questioning.

This comes after Assam Police, in February of this year, discovered a significant communication network that was purportedly run by extremist pro-Khalistan separatists and self-styled Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh and operating from inside Dibrugarh Jail.

Prominent pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh was charged with organizing unlawful operations and keeping in touch with outside parties after his detention in April 2023.

Dibrugarh police earlier registered a case following this incident.

The superintendent of the Dibrugarh Central Jail was taken into custody to be questioned in light of this issue.

It was previously believed that Amritpal Singh may have had connections to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and may have financed the Anandpur Khalsa Fauj (AKF), a private militia. Singh is thought to have carried on with his operations while he was incarcerated, which prompted state and federal authorities to work together to take down his network.

In addition, Assam's Director General of Police (DGP), Gyanendra Pratap Singh, disclosed that extra security measures were put in place due to rumors of illegal activity taking place on the jail's grounds. Later investigations turned out several illegal gadgets, including spy-cam pens, keypad phones, smartphones, and more.

Born on January 17, 1993, Amritpal Singh Sandhu is well-known for his fervent support of Khalistan and self-described Sikh preaching. After his return to Punjab in September 2022, he took on a contentious leadership role in the "Heirs of Punjab" campaign, which promoted Khalistan as an independent Sikh state.

The identification of this communication network within the Dibrugarh Jail highlights the difficulties that law enforcement has in fighting terrorism and preserving security in correctional facilities. Extensive steps are being taken to avoid any recurrence of such operations, and investigations are underway to ascertain the breadth of the network and the source of its support.

According to authorities, Amritpal Singh was admitted last Wednesday to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH).

Reportedly, Amritpal Singh's other assistant who was incarcerated has also been admitted to the AMCH.

According to sources, the two had multiple medical conditions, including epilepsy. Their health declined early on Tuesday night, and they were admitted to the hospital.

Notably, in October 2023, Singh and other prisoners within the Dibrugarh jail began an extended hunger strike. Their objection stems from what they say are limitations on the access their selected lawyer has to them while they are being held.
