The opposition led the disturbances as Gulab Chand Kataria, the newly appointed Governor of Assam, unfurled the budget session...
Digital Desk: On the first day of the Assam Legislative Assembly's budget session, Congress MLAs Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Rokibul Hussain, along with Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, disrupted proceedings.
This follows repeated requests from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma not to interrupt legislative proceedings with the budget session beginning today.
According to reports, the trio instigated the disturbances as newly appointed Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria opened the budget session with his presentation to the parliament.
As a result of the instabilities, the Governor's speech before the budget session was trimmed to 17 minutes. Yet, the trio advanced valid arguments while disrupting the budget discussion.
They raised the issue of Maharashtra MLA Bacchu Kadu referring to Assamese people as dog meat consumers and proposed that street canines from Maharashtra be sent here to help with their problems.
The matter was raised by Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, who demanded that the Assam Governor's speech address the issue.
Furthermore, the opposition demanded on the opening day of the budget session that the Assam government take action on the issue instead of ignoring it.
Notably, during the Maharashtra assembly session, Legislator Bacchu Kadu proposed that street dogs from the state be deported to Assam because people here ate them. According to Kadu, this would assist address the city's growing problem with street dogs.
The insensitive remarks were uncalled for and drew a lot of criticism from animal rights groups as well as sections of the Assamese population.
Bacchu Kadu was one of the MLAs that accompanied then-rebel MLA and current Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to Guwahati in Assam as they attempted to disrupt the state's elected administration.
However, the Assam administration did not take the situation into account, despite suspicion circulating that it was because of their close links with the Maharashtra government.
