Guwahati : Dr. Binoy Kumar Saikia, a Senior Scientist at North East Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat (NEIST) Assam, has been felicitated with the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for Science and Technology 2021. The scientist has been awarded the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for his pioneering research in the field of coal and energy.
The award is being presented to the senior scientist by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) under Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences category.

The Award was ceremonially presented to Dr Binoy Kumar Saikia by Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi. The Award presentation ceremony is underway at Raj Bhawan where dignitaries of various fields are present at the ceremony to witness the award ceremony.
Dr. Binoy Kumar Saikia is the fifth person from Assam to receive this award since its institution.
The senior scientist is widely known for his exponential contribution in the scientific research involving coal and petroleum. He has contributed to the formation of fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from Indian coal. He had earlier won the RP Bhatnagar Award in 2015-16 and Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award in 2012.

The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize is annually presented to any person of Indian origin (working in India) or overseas citizen of India (OCI) engaged in pioneering research work in any field of science and technology and their contribution for the humankind.
The award is presented to the scientist under the age of 45 years as of 31st December of the year preceding the year of the Prize. The award is named after the late Dr (Sir) Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, founder Director of the CSIR.
