ECI Initiates Delimitation of Assembly, Parliamentary Constituencies in Assam
Article 170 of the Constitution requires that the 2001 census results be used to alter the state's parliamentary and assembly constituencies.

Digital Desk: According to Section 8A of the RP Act, 1950, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated delimitation of Assembly and parliamentary districts in Assam.

To revise the state's Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies, the 2001 Census data will be used.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Assam was instructed by Election Commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel to approach the state government about issuing a complete ban on the creation of new administrative units beginning on January 1, 2023, until the state's delimitation exercise is complete.

Article 170 of the Constitution requires that the 2001 census results be used to alter the state's parliamentary and assembly constituencies.

As per Articles 330 and 332 of the Indian Constitution, reserved seats would be given to members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

To define the constituencies, the Commission will develop and then finalise its standards and procedures.

The Commission will keep in mind the physical characteristics, current administrative unit boundaries, communication facilities, public convenience, and, to the extent practical, the constituencies will be maintained as geographically compact areas.

After the Commission has finalised an initial draft for Assam's constituency delimitation, it will be published in the state and federal gazettes to allow for public comment and objections.
Additionally, a notice describing the time and location of public sittings to be held in the state will be published in two local vernacular newspapers.

The Union Ministry of Law & Justice has asked the Election Commission of India to carry out the delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies in the state.
