Digital Desk: The Inland Water Transport Department (IWTD) of Assam announced on Monday that ferry services between Guwahati and North Guwahati will be suspended from tomorrow onward.
The decision was made by the governing body in the midst of an alarming surge in the Brahmaputra River's water level.
Notably, on Sunday, the Brahmaputra River exceeded the danger mark of 105.70 meters in Assam's Dibrugarh.
Reportedly, the Brahmaputra was flowing at 105.72 meters at 9 p.m. on Sunday.
People living in low-lying areas were ordered to vacate their homes and move to higher ground after several houses were submerged as the water level rose.
This comes after Majuli-Nimati ferry services in Assam were immediately discontinued indefinitely due to an increase in the water level of the Brahmaputra River caused by continuous heavy rainfall.
The decision was taken by the Inland Water Transport Department in response to rising water levels.
Passengers have expressed their concern and worry as a result of the abrupt suspension of services.
