Digital Desk: The horrific video of two women being paraded naked by a mob and then gangraped, which emerged from strife-torn Manipur, became a nightmare for netizens across the country, raising anxiety and terror.
In a recent development, it has come to light that so far, four people have been arrested in connection with the horrifying incident in Manipur in which two women were paraded naked and allegedly gang-raped, a video of which has gone viral on the internet.
Manipur Police posted on Twitter, stating, "Four main accused arrested in the Viral Video Case: 03 (three) more main accused of the heinous crime of abduction and gangrape under Nongpok Sekmai PS, Thoubal District have been arrested today. So a total 04 (four) persons have been arrested till now."
Manipur Police is conducting raids and making considerable attempts to apprehend the remaining suspects as quickly as possible, according to the state police force.
The Manipur Police and national forces have set up checkpoints and search operations.
In response to the violations, 129 naka checkpoints have been set up throughout several districts of Manipur, and 657 persons have been apprehended.
"Movement of 138 (one hundred thirty-eight) cars on NH-2 with vital products and 464 (four hundred sixty-eight) vehicles on NH-37 have been ensured. In order to ensure the free and secure transit of the vehicles, strict security measures are implemented in all vulnerable spots, and a security escort is given in critical stretches, stated Manipur Police.
Anusuiya Uikey, the governor of Manipur, condemned the viral video showing women being paraded naked and allegedly being sexually assaulted. She also ordered the Director General of Police (DGP) to act right away to bring those responsible to justice and to punish them severely following the law.
Two people, including the main perpetrator, have been detained, said Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who announced after a widespread uproar over the horrifying incident in Manipur. He made it clear that his government would stop at nothing to get the accused given the death penalty.
"One was arrested yesterday, and I recently learned that another was also being held at this time. The questioning is still ongoing. The state police have detained the alleged primary offender, and those who were involved have also been detained and will be charged following the law, Singh explained.
The All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) held a rally on May 3 in opposition to the proposed inclusion of members of the Meitei group in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs), which sparked the outbreak of violence in Manipur.
