Digital Desk: At least five individuals were killed, including a police officer and 12 others were injured in Manipur yesterday, where ethnic confrontations have claimed at least 80 lives.
New violence has been reported in numerous sections of the state after accused terrorists carrying sophisticated weaponry set fire to several residences in the Serou and Sugunu areas.
This comes just days before Home Minister Amit Shah visits the violence-hit state.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced yesterday that "40 terrorists" had been killed in recent days.
"Terrorists have used M-16 and AK-47 assault rifles, as well as sniper rifles, against civilians." They came to many communities and set fire to people's homes. We have begun taking aggressive action against them with the assistance of the army and other security forces. "We have received reports that 40 terrorists have been killed," Mr Singh told reporters.
According to the Chief Minister, the recent surge in violent attacks on residents on the fringes of Imphal Valley was well-planned and is highly condemned.
Home Minister Amit Shah has urged both the Meiteis and the Kukis to be composed and to work together to restore normality.
Mr Shah previously met with leaders of the Meitei and Kuki communities, as well as other stakeholders, to assess the steps being taken to restore peace in the state.
Last month, tribal groups, primarily Kukis, demonstrated against the Meitei community's proposal to be placed in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category, which would grant them reservation rights and access to forest resources.
The eviction of Kuki people from the reserve forest area had sparked a succession of smaller protests before the violence.
To prevent further escalation of violence, the administration has enforced curfews and internet prohibitions in many localities.
Fresh violence has also caused district authorities in Imphal's east and west districts to reduce the 11-hour curfew relaxation period to six and a half hours.
