Digital Desk: The Gauhati High Court has ordered private educational institutions to provide free education to 25% of students living below the poverty line (BPL).
The state government was directed by the court to make sure that the BPL students received free education in private institutions.
The High Court's ruling came in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the 'We for Guwahati Foundation. They emphasized the Education Department's failure to send any orders to private educational institutions to give free education to BPL students.
Though it had submitted an affidavit to the court, the state government did not follow the act's provisions.
The court ordered the education department official to personally confirm free education for BPL students in private institutions.
Education activists who have been fighting for equitable access to education for everyone welcomed the ruling. This is likely to benefit thousands of students from low-income families who were previously denied entry to private colleges owing to their financial situation.
The Gauhati High Court's decision is a crucial step towards guaranteeing the Right to Education Act, 2009, is efficiently enforced and that education is available to all, regardless of economic position.
