    Assam: Goalpara MLA arrested for derogatory remarks on priests, sent to one-day police custody
    A resident of Guwahati's Bhetapara neighbourhood filed a police report (FIR) with the Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Zone, leading to the arrest of Aftab Uddin Mollah on Tuesday.

    Digital Desk: Reports on Wednesday stated that Aftab Uddin Mollah, the Goalpara Congress MLA, who was detained for derogatory remarks made against Hindu priests and saints, has been remanded to a single day of police custody.

    A resident of Guwahati's Bhetapara neighbourhood filed a police report (FIR) with the Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Zone, leading to the arrest of Aftab Uddin Mollah on Tuesday.

    According to reports, earlier today, the Congress member appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court located in Guwahati. According to reports, the judge denied his request for release.

    Notably, on November 4, 2023, Aftab Uddin made an extremely offensive remark regarding priests, Namgharias, and saints during a public assembly in the Goalpara area which has been strongly reacted by the people of Assam.

    It is to be noted that APCC’s chief Bhupen Kumar Borah then issued a show cause notice which stated, “Being a secular Democratic Political Party, the Indian National Congress is totally against the works of spreading hatred and religious and communal poisonous comments. Rather, Indian National Congress has been persistently working to spread the message of unity, integrity, and social harmonious consciousness amongst the people of the Country amidst diversity."

    Moreover, a case was registered against Mollah at the Dispur Police Station under Sections 295(a)/ 153A(1)(b)/505(2) under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), sources said.
