Digital Desk: A police officer and a journalist from a private media house in Guwahati were apprehended following the discovery of a substantial amount of money linked to alleged hawala transactions. The arrested individuals have been identified as Toufique Uddin Ahmed, a journalist with a private media house, and Mubarak Ali, the Sub-Inspector (SI) of Bharalu Police Station.
Sources reveal that the Bharalu Police have also detained another individual in connection with the case. During raids conducted in the month of November, a considerable sum of Rs 25 lakh was seized from the possession of both Ahmed and Ali.
Toufique Uddin Ahmed was taken into custody by the Crime Branch in the morning from Guwahati’s Garigaon locality.
The arrest comes on the heels of a similar incident earlier this month when the Guwahati Police apprehended two individuals, Devkaran Sen (27) and Manoj Kumar (47), seizing over Rs 1,69,70,000 from their possession in the Athgaon area. The funds were suspected to be part of hawala transactions carried out by the duo.
Official information indicates that the Athgaon Police acted on specific intelligence, conducting a raid in a rented house belonging to Md. Jamir Uddin. The arrests have raised concerns about the prevalence of illicit financial activities in the region, prompting authorities to intensify efforts to curb such practices. Further investigations are underway to unravel the full extent of the alleged hawala network.
