Gandhi will conclude his visit to Manipur by visiting relief camps in Churachandpur and Moirang today and has requested a meeting with the Manipur Governor at Raj Bhavan.
Digital Desk: Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi expressed deep sorrow over the devastation caused by the floods in Assam, criticizing both the state's Bharatiya Janata Party government and the central government for their failure to effectively manage the crisis.
Upon arriving in Manipur on Monday, Gandhi visited a relief camp at Jiribam's Higher Secondary School. He is scheduled to visit two additional relief camps in Manipur and meet with the governor later today. En route to Manipur, he also visited a relief camp at Fulertal in Assam, where he interacted with flood-affected individuals.
"The extreme devastation caused by flooding in Assam is heartbreaking. Assam Congress leaders apprised me of the situation on ground - 60 plus deaths, 53,000 plus displaced and 24,00,000 affected. These numbers reflect the gross and grave mismanagement by BJP's double-engine government which came to power with the promise of a ‘flood-free Assam’. Assam needs a comprehensive and compassionate vision - proper relief, rehabilitation, and compensation in the short term, and a pan-Northeast water management authority to do everything necessary to control floods in the long term,” Gandhi tweeted.
This visit marks Gandhi's first visit to conflict-affected Manipur since the Lok Sabha elections. In Jiribam, he listened to accounts from camp residents about their experiences and the lack of government support following recent violence in the area.
Earlier, Gandhi was greeted at Silchar Airport by Pradesh Congress leaders from Assam and Manipur. He received a memorandum from Assam Congress leaders highlighting the flood situation and urging parliamentary action. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Borah emphasized the need for Gandhi's intervention to secure adequate relief and compensation, criticizing the BJP government for its failures.
