Digital Desk: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is in Manipur today to lay foundation stones and open multiple projects, including the northeast's first Olympic Park.
The first Olympic park in the northeast, located on Sangaithel hills and built by the Manipur government, features monuments of state Olympians.
Manipur has produced 19 Olympians since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, including seven from hockey, four from boxing and weightlifting, three from judo, and one from archery.
The site will also include sculptures of future Olympians from the state. A judo, weightlifting, and boxing training centre, designed in collaboration with Samsung, will also be built in the park.
The home minister was in poll-bound Tripura yesterday to kick off the Jan Viswas Yatra, which is viewed as the commencement of the BJP's campaign in Tripura. Mr Shah has begun his yatra around the country in preparation for the important 2024 general elections.
The home minister will also be in Nagaland, where he will meet with representatives of the Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation (ENPO) to discuss their desire for a separate state. ENPO had previously vowed to boycott the state's assembly elections.
The Nagaland Cabinet has urged ENPO to reconsider its statehood claim, particularly after the Centre rejected the concept of carving up 'Frontier Nagaland' from six districts of the state.
ENPO leaders met with key home ministry officials behind closed doors yesterday in Guwahati.
