Digital Desk: The governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey, was handed over with a memorandum by the delegation of opposition leaders from the Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), who were on a visit to violently hit Manipur.
During their discussion, the Governor and the visiting delegation discussed sending a multi-party delegation to violence hit Manipur.
The grand opposition alliance's team of 21 members came on Saturday for a two-day visit to the state, which has been suffering since May 4 as a result of ethnic strife and violence.
After meeting with the Governor, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a member of the visiting delegation, told reporters that "all 21 MPs handed over a memorandum to her. She expressed her sorrow and pain as we chatted with her about the situation in Manipur."
The Congress MP further mentioned that during their two-day meeting with the Governor, they provided their firsthand assessment of the situation on the ground and their experiences.
Adhir added, "We shared whatever we witnessed and experienced during our visit to the relief centers, and she agreed with the suggestions that we put forward."
He further stated, "She also proposed talks with the leaders of all communities in the quest for a solution and peace. She also suggested that both the ruling (center) and opposition parties send an all-party delegation to Manipur to address the people's distrust."
Earlier in the delegation's meeting with the governor of Manipur on Sunday, Chowdhury said that the situation in Manipur was "worsening."
"The situation in Manipur was overlooked. The state's position is deteriorating because the state and federal administrations have turned a deaf ear to the plight of its people. Peace should be restored as soon as possible since it is essential for ensuring communal harmony and social justice. We shall urge the Governor to make every effort to return the state to normalcy as soon as possible," the Congress leader added earlier in the day.
Earlier, on Saturday, the Opposition delegation said its aim was to bring about "psychological healing" for the people during its two-day visit to the state.
However, the BJP criticized the team and claimed that while the government was prepared to tackle Manipur in Parliament, the opposition was "running away."
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who was surrounded by other delegation participants, earlier stated, "We always made it clear that we would be happy to join the Prime Minister in leading an all-party delegation here. After all, we all want peace to return to Manipur as soon as possible."
However, the BJP referred to the opposition's visit to Manipur as "political tourism" and a "showoff."
BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi earlier accused the opposition of avoiding a Manipur-related debate in Parliament, saying, "The Opposition has the right to go wherever. The government is prepared for discussion (on Manipur), nevertheless, and the Parliament is currently in session. So why are they escaping? They stopped the Parliament from operating for the past seven days."
The 21-member Opposition delegation from both Houses includes Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Gaurav Gogoi, K Suresh and Phulo Devi Netam of the Congress; Rajiv Ranjan Lalan Singh of the JDU; Sushmita Dev from Trinamool Congress; Kanimozhi from DMK; Sandosh Kumar of the CPI; AA Rahim from CPI(M), Manoj Kumar Jha of RJD; Javed Ali Khan of SP; Mahua Maji of JMM; PP Mohammed Faizal of NCP; Aneel Prasad Hegde of JDU, ET Mohammed Basheer of IUML; NK Premachandran of RSP; Sushil Gupta of AAP; Arvind Sawant of Shiv Sena (UBT); D Ravikumar of VCK; Thiru Thol Thirumavalavan also of VCK; and Jayant Singh of the RLD.
