Digital Desk: Internet services in Manipur will remain suspended for five more days, the Manipur government announced on Friday (May 12).

Reportedly, the order was issued to prevent any disruptions to the public's peace and security within the purview of the State of Manipur and would continue in place for another five days with immediate effect from the moment this suspension order becomes operational.

The state government stated in a notification that the Director General of Police, Manipur, reported that there are still reports of incidents such as fighting among volunteers/youths of major communities living in the State, as well as reports of arson of houses and properties.

Further, there is concern that some anti-social elements may use social media extensively to spread hateful images, hate speech, and hate video messages inciting public interest, which could have serious consequences for the law and order situation in the State of Manipur.

"And, in order to thwart the design and activities of anti-national and anti-social elements, and to maintain peace and communal harmony, as well as to prevent any loss of life or danger to public/private property, it has become necessary to take adequate measures to maintain law and order in the public interest, by preventing the spread of disinformation and false rumours via various social media platforms such as Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter on mobile phone and SMS," the notification added.
