Its BJP vs TMC in Tripura: TMC leader Saayoni Ghosh shouts "KHELA HOBE"

Agartala: Tripura Police on Sunday arrested Trinamool Congress leader Saayoni Ghosh on charges of criminal conspiracy and attempt to murder after she loudly shouted at a BJP street corner meeting addressed by Chief Minister of Tripura Biplab Kumar Deb and exclaimed ‘Khela Hobe’. A complaint was filed against her at the East Agartala Women’s Police Station on Saturday night.

Ghosh’s arrest has anchored a series of claims by the TMC blaming the BJP for ‘falsely framing’ her as part of a premeditated conspiracy.

Speaking to reports, West Tripura Additional SP Jagadish Reddy said: “We received a complaint against her and summoned her for interrogation. After recording the statement of witnessed, we found evidence that she had involvement in connection with the case registered under Sections 153, 153A, 307 and 120B of the IPC. So, we have arrested her. We shall produce her before the court tomorrow.”

On the charges of trying to promote enmity between groups of people and attempt to murder, the official said the police have found “preliminary evidence”. Four other people were present in the vehicle along with Ghosh on Saturday evening, he said, adding that police were trying to arrest them.

A police official in Tripura, who did not want to be named, said a BJP worker lodged a complaint alleging that Ghosh had reached the spot where the meeting was being held and shouted “Khela Hobe” and claimed that there were not even 50 people in the gathering.

TMC leaders alleged that their workers were also roughed up by the BJP party members, a claim that the saffron party has denied.

The Mamata Banerjee-led party is trying to gain a foothold in the state ahead of the 2023 assembly elections. It is contesting the civic polls to be held on November 25.

Abhishek Banerjee in a tweet has accused the BJP government in the North-eastern state of disregarding Supreme Court orders on the rights of political parties to hold peaceful programmes.

Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev also criticized the BJP for attacking Trinamool leaders and supporters in front of the women police station.

Sundays’ incidents were the latest in a series of clashes between workers of the two parties in Tripura. Buoyed by its third consecutive victory in West Bengal assembly elections, held in April-May this year, the Mamata-Banerjee-headed Trinamool is looking to expand itself nationally, with the BJP ruled Tripura and Goa being the first two states the TMC looks to expand itself to.
