Digital Desk: A precious and rare dolphin was discovered dead in an awful situation near Dhubri, provoking grief and fury among villagers and environmentalists.
The Gangetic River Dolphin is India's national aquatic mammal and the official animal of Guwahati.
The dolphin, which was sighted in the Majerchar district of Dhubri, was said to be an adult with its lower jaw severed by a fishing net snare.
Dolphin numbers are severely reduced in this region, from Jogighopa in Goalpara to Sukhchar in Dhubri, according to Mehtab Uddin Ahmed, an environmentalist from Dhubri.
"Fishermen must be more vigilant and respectful to protect the aquatic symbol of Guwahati and the nation," Ahmed informed the media.
"A few years ago, we could see many dolphins (Sisus) regularly" But now, we hardly ever see a dolphin (Sisu) in town," Ahmed remarked.
The IUCN has defined the Ganges river dolphin, formally known as Platanista Gangetica, as endangered because it faces major dangers to its survival, said Ahmed.
