Lok Sabha Polls: APCC, TMC accuse Assam government of election code violation

The Election Commission released the calendar for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Assam on Saturday.

Digital Desk: In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) accused the Assam Government of violating the Model Code of Conduct.

According to APCC Chief Borah, despite the Model Code of Conduct's implementation, government advertisements featuring the Prime Minister and Chief Minister continue to run.

Borah asks the CEC to take immediate action to address this alleged violation in the letter.

Similarly, Former MP and state TMC President Ripun Bora drew attention to the conspicuous hoardings across the state that prominently featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a formal letter submitted to the Chief Election Commissioner.

The letter claimed that even after the Model Code of Conduct went into force on March 16, 2024, there are still many hoardings in Assam with official advertisements and pictures of the prime minister and chief minister on them.

"With reference to the above this is to bring to your notice that Model Code of Conduct has come into force from evening of 16th March 2024. But there are still visible huge number of Hoardings across the state of Assam bearing different advertisements of the Government with photographs of Prime Minister and Chief Minister of Assam, etc.," the letter stated.

He also pleaded with the Election Commission to step in and order the Assam government to remove all government advertisements that included images of the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister. '

“Therefore you are requested to direct Assam Government to remove all the Government advertisements with photographs of Prime Minister and Chief Minister of Assam, etc immediately,” the letter read.

The ECI's Model Code of Conduct states that it is best to refrain from using official mass media to improperly influence voters during elections or from running commercials at the expense of public funds.

The Election Commission released the calendar for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Assam on Saturday. It showed that there will be three phases to the voting process: April 19, April 26, and May 7, with June 4 being the day for vote counting.
