Digital Desk: In response to the rising incidents of arson and mounting concerns about the spread of misinformation, the Government of Manipur has issued an order suspending internet and mobile data services, effective immediately. The order, which will be in force for the next five days, until 3:00 p.m. on May 26, aims to maintain peace and order, protect public safety, and prevent the spread of inflammatory content via social media platforms.

The decision to suspend internet service followed reports revealing the targeted arson of houses and premises in the region. Authorities are concerned that anti-social forces may use social media's broad reach to disseminate hate speech, arouse public passion, and perpetuate acts of violence, which might have serious consequences for the state of Manipur's communal peace and public tranquility.

The government has adopted a strict position against the dissemination of false rumors and explosive facts because it recognizes the immediate danger to life, public/private property, and the possibility of significant unrest. The suspension order specifically includes Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media sites, as well as other electronic devices like tablets, PCs, and mobile phones. In addition, the order prohibits the use of bulk SMS services to mobilize agitators and demonstrators, creating a serious risk to public safety and property through acts of arson, vandalism, and violence.

By exercising the powers granted under Rule 2 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, the Government of Manipur, acting in the interest of public welfare and ensuring the preservation of peace, has directed all service providers to comply with this order. Mobile data services, internet/data services, including broadband connections such as Reliance Jio Fibre, Airtel Xtreme Black, BSNL FTTH, and internet/data services via VSATS of Bharatnet Phase-II, would be temporarily halted inside Manipur's territorial jurisdiction.

While the government recognizes the hardship caused by the temporary suspension, it emphasizes the importance of these measures in combating the dissemination of misinformation and false rumours, which constitute a direct threat to public safety and social peace. The directive underlines the government's commitment to combating anti-national and anti-social elements while also protecting life and property.

This suspension order, which is effective immediately, will be in place for the next five days, ending at 3:00 p.m. on May 26. To ensure public awareness and understanding, the government wants to share this information publicly through press releases and electronic media outlets. It should be mentioned that any infraction of this order will result in the necessary legal consequences.
