Digital Desk: The Indian Army reported a clash in Manipur's sensitive Kangpokpi district early this morning, saying that armed protesters opened fire in the village of Haraothel.

In response, the army said it mobilized troops stationed nearby to prevent the situation from escalating.

The army columns reportedly came under fire while on their way. According to an official statement, the army reacted in a "calibrated manner" to avoid collateral damage.

"Unconfirmed reports indicate some casualties. Build-up of large crowds in the area also reported. Situation being closely monitored and further details will follow," the army said in a statement.

So far, more than 100 people have died and others have been displaced as a result of ethnic violence in the northeastern state between Meitei and Kuki communities.

Clashes erupted on May 3 after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' in the hill districts in response to the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis make up around 53% of Manipur's population and dwell primarily in the Imphal Valley. Tribals—Nagas and Kukis—make up 40% of the population and live in the hill districts.

Long-standing ethnic tensions between the state's populations have fueled the violence in Manipur.

A Manipur High Court verdict in April directed the state government to make a decision on the Scheduled Tribe status issue, escalating tensions.

In response to the unrest, the Indian Army had already sent some 10,000 troops and paramilitary personnel to restore peace and order.

A retired Chief Justice-led panel will investigate the violence, and a peace committee will be formed under Governor and security advisor Kuldeep Singh, along with members of civil society.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is looking into whether the violence was the result of a conspiracy.
