Meghalaya: Landslide blocks Sonapur Tunnel, police say avoid route
All efforts to clean the tunnel were useless due to landslides caused by the recent incessant and heavy rains.

Digital Desk: Transport through the Sonapur tunnel cannot resume due to ongoing landslides in the area. The tunnel on National Highway 6, which connects Silchar and Shillong, was blocked due to landslides.

The significant tunnel also links portions of lower Assam to the adjoining states of Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.

All efforts to clean the tunnel were useless due to landslides caused by the recent incessant and heavy rains.

As NHAI attempts to clear the debris from the tunnel, the district government and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have requested citizens to avoid using the road.

On National Highway-6, which connects Mizoram with the rest of the nation, a significant landslide was caused earlier on June 16 by heavy rainfall.

Officials claim that the landslide occurred in the Hunthar neighbourhood on the western outskirts of Aizawl. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported as of yet.

Restoration of services and cleanup of the debris on the section of the national highway were both in progress. Several areas of the state have experienced landslides due to the last days' nonstop rain.
